Linguistic and cultural approach to boost crosscultural competence

Abstract: 

Introduction. Modern methods of teaching foreign languages are targeted at the ways how to form and boost crosscultural competence. Theoretical analysis. The analysis of the current state of linguoculturology allows it to be held as an integral part of both linguistics and linguodidactics. At the same time, the linguistic and cultural approach in teaching foreign languages, noted in Russian scientific works, needs to be investigated in detail. Many Russian works on linguoculturology dwell on the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language, however, the ways how to apply the linguoculturological researches’ results in other languages teaching, especially English, is far from being described. Empirical analysis. The proposed set of exercises, based on the linguistic and cultural features of British and American societies, made it possible to improve the students’ crosscultural competence. The tasks are designed for the B2 language proficiency level and involve performing in pairs and groups of 4-5 people. Conclusion. The developed tasks were successfully tested in the autumnal term of 2024 in MCU, within the framework of the discipline “Practice in crosscultural communication (English)” for 1st year undergraduates of the direction “Pedagogy”. That allowed the proposed strategy to be recommended for teaching master students of pedagogical departments.
