A narrative typology of stigmatized identity management strategies in Oscar Wilde’s fairy tales
Introduction. The relevance of studying stigmatized identity management strategies is substantiated in the context of contemporary social challenges that actualize the “us – them” binary opposition in interpersonal relationships. A methodological shortage of projective psychodiagnostic tools in Russian psychology is noted, specifically tools aimed at exploring the deep, not fully conscious features of experiencing social stigmatization and its internalization. Theoretical part. Drawing on E. Goff man’s concept of stigmatized identity and stigma internalization, as well as D. P. McAdams’ narrative approach, the choice of O. Wilde’s fairy tales as empirical material for constructing a narrative typology is justified. Based on a narrative analysis of “The Nightingale and the Rose”, “The Selfish Giant”, and “The Birthday of the Infanta”, five strategies for managing stigmatized identity are identified and described: “Concealment of Stigmatized Identity”, “Sacrificial Sublimation”, “Confrontation with Society”, “Refiguration of Stigmatized Identity”, and “Rejection of the Stigmatized Self”. Methods. The primary method was qualitative narrative analysis. Conclusion. The developed narrative typology fills a methodological gap in the psychodiagnostics of stigmatized identity and its management strategies, serving as the theoretical foundation for constructing an original projective test aimed at diagnosing these strategies.
