From Platonic anamnesis to the architectonics of philosophical knowledge: The historical-philosophical status of reminiscence
Introduction. The article explores the phenomenon of reminiscence as a possible method of constructing the history of philosophy, which transforms the Platonic concept of recollection (anamnesis) into a tool for synthesizing universal ideas and subjective experience. This approach ensures the unity of philosophical knowledge by interpreting timeless concepts within a historical-cultural context. Theoretical analysis. It is noted that the philosophical origins of reminiscence are traced back to ancient philosophy, particularly Plato’s doctrine of anamnesis as a principle of cognition through the “recollection” of non-empirical knowledge. Tertullian’s translation, which established the term “reminiscence,” emphasized its subjective orientation: unlike anamnesis, which aspires to universal ideas, reminiscence embodies knowledge within the context of individual experience. This dualism is revealed through the analysis of works by F. Ferré, J. Derrida, and E. Levinas. While anamnesis refers to ontological structures, reminiscence links them to historical-cultural interpretation, thereby transforming memory into an instrument of cognition. Examples from the history of philosophy (Plato, Parmenides) demonstrate that reminiscence ensures conceptual unity not through linear progress but by synthesizing timeless ideas with subjective perception. Conclusion. Reminiscence functions as an architectonic method, connecting the ontological with the historical, emphasizing its role in shaping a holistic philosophical discourse.
