Recognition of Facial Expressions and Individual Personal Characteristics of the Observers
The goal of this study is to identify relationships between the accuracy of recognition of standard facial expressions (taken from the Ekman and Friesin ‘pictures of affect’ series) and individual personal characteristics of the observers. The presentation times of the target faces for the recognition task are varied (13, 26, 39 and 52 msec.). The total number of the participants is 34. The experiment shows that (a) introverts tend to have low levels of accuracy while trying to recognise the sample ‘happy’ face, (b) problems in volitional personality sphere and underdeveloped sensitivity for social norms are correlated with low levels of anger recognition accuracy, (c) fear recognition accuracy has a negative correlation with competitiveness, (d) ‘neutral’ face seems to cause more trouble for those participants who are marked upbeat, stable and self-sufficient. Moreover, flexible emotional sphere is proved to facilitate recognition of fear and surprise.
