Coping Strategies of People, Suffering from Drug and Alcohol Addiction, with Different Levels of Hardiness
This article presents results of an empirical study intended to analyze coping strategies of people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction with different levels of hardiness. First theoretical approaches to hardiness and its components: commitment, control, challenge, have been analyzed. The study was conducted in a rehab center for people suffering from drug and (or) alcohol addiction. The study involved 37 people suffering from drug and (or) alcohol addiction – 27 men and 10 women aged 16 to 47 years old. All the people were in remission lasting from several days to several years. We have discovered: the higher the hardiness level of study participants, the less they used coping strategies – self-distraction, denial, behavioral disengagement, substance use; the more often used active coping. In that way we can conclude that the higher the hardiness level of study participants, the more effective coping strategies they involve. We also provided an example of a study of the coping strategies using projective technique «Man in the rain». Hardiness is a powerful resource to confront addiction as well as despair, uncertainty, and loss of meaning associated with it. The obtained results can be used can be used in the prevention of addiction and in psychological work with people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.
