Psychological Competency of Students of Midwifery Specialty

The aim of our research was to study the features of the psychological competence of future obstetricians. Obstetrics is a medical field in which the psychological competence of a specialist plays a special role, given the close psychosomatic relationship characteristic of the perinatal period. However, at the present stage, this issue is an almost unexplored area, including the formation of psychological competence during vocational training of students majoring in Obstetrics. In order to study the features of the psychological competence of future obstetricians, this study was conducted. A specially designed questionnaire aimed at studying the above components of psychological competence was used as a research method. According to the results of the study, it was found that the majority of future obstetricians are characterized by the low level of knowledge in the field of psychology of pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum period; as well as the low level of formation of skills to provide psychological support in these periods. The most problematic topics for future midwives were: peculiarities of the state of consciousness of a woman in childbirth, postpartum depression, psychophysiological methods of pain relief in childbirth. The most difficult situations in terms of psychological support for students are the following ones: the forthcoming painful medical procedure, the detection of fetal malformations in a woman, complaints about painful feelings in childbirth. At the same time, despite the lack of psychological knowledge and skills, most students have a motivational readiness to provide psychological support in obstetric activities and a desire to receive additional training in this area. Thus, this study demonstrates the importance of additional psychological training of future obstetricians, which should include the main topics of perinatal psychology: psychological bases of pregnancy, childbirth, postnatal period. There is also a need to develop practical skills to provide psychological support to patients in obstetric activities, especially in perinatal crisis situations.
